Global Initiative

Whether you are an investor entering new markets, a policymaker shaping the built environment, or a student preparing to lead across borders, we welcome your engagement in building a more connected and resilient global real estate ecosystem.

The Initiative in Global Markets explores how capital, expertise, and innovation move across borders—and how these forces shape the future of the built environment. At a time when real estate markets are increasingly influenced by geopolitical shifts, sustainability imperatives, and digitally enabled investment strategies, the Initiative provides a platform for rigorous scholarship, direct industry engagement, and transformational learning.

Our work is rooted in the belief that a truly global perspective is not only essential to institutional success, but also requires deep local understanding. From market-leading research to immersive field experiences, we prepare students, partners, and faculty to engage across geographies, disciplines, and cycles—bridging the gap between local knowledge and global strategy.

Our Institute, Globally Networked

As part of a university with three global campuses and a footprint spanning six continents, the Initiative draws on the full reach of NYU’s academic ecosystem. We translate this infrastructure into a living network of global dialogue and discovery. A centerpiece of this work is the Global Real Estate Markets Conference, held annually in the United Arab Emirates in partnership with Stern at NYU Abu Dhabi. This convening brings together developers, institutional investors, technology leaders, and policymakers for forward-looking dialogue on deploying capital, navigating risk, and responding to structural change.

The Institute also benefits from the guidance and expertise of our global advisory board, whose members represent senior leadership across Asia Pacific, South Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. Their insights help shape our programs and ensure that our research and student engagement reflect both global market realities and region-specific priorities.

Flagship Course: Global Real Estate Markets

The Initiative’s academic cornerstone is Global Real Estate Markets, a flagship MBA and undergraduate course that explores the dynamics of international real estate investing. Students examine how equity and debt capital move across borders, and how differences in legal, regulatory, and economic environments influence investment decision-making. The course emphasizes global portfolio strategy, capital deployment in unfamiliar markets, and the intersection of local constraints with institutional imperatives.

Supported by the Franck Ruimy Global Experience Fund, the course includes immersive field modules that bring students into direct contact with market leaders in cities such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. These site-based experiences are more than academic—they are career-shaping. Students meet with senior developers, fund managers, policy officials, and local experts to explore how global capital interacts with local challenges and opportunities.

Research with Global Reach and Local Depth

The Initiative produces research that informs decision-making across borders. Whether analyzing institutional capital flows, urban transformation, or climate-driven risks, we work in collaboration with partners in industry, policy, and academia to develop insights that travel across markets.

A recent example is the 2024 World Economic Forum report, Reimagining Real Estate, co-authored by Sam Chandan and Kalin Bracken. Drawing from over 100 interviews with real estate leaders around the world, the report explores how capital, technology, and regulation are reshaping the investment landscape—and how global real estate players are adapting to long-term structural change. It exemplifies the Initiative’s commitment to producing knowledge that is comparative, applied, and globally actionable.
